Local Yarn Store tour - Portland edition

Whilst visiting Portland, Oregon for a long weekend, I got to visit a couple of yarn stores around the city. Those yarn store were:

  • Ritual Dyes

  • Fibre Rythmns

I filmed it all for a Youtube video, which you can watch below, or otherwise keep scrolling to read all about them! At the end I’ll also mention the yarn stores I didn’t get to, but hope to one day! If you’d like to know about the non-yarny places we visited, for some inspiration, I have listed them all at the bottom of this post.

For other U.S.A yarn stores and travel tips for knitters and crocheters, give my other blog posts a visit.

Ritual Dyes

Ritual Dyes was the first on my list of yarn stores once we booked the Portland trip. I am a fan of Jessie Maed Designs, and I know a number of her designs are made with yarn from Ritual Dyes. I’ve previously knit her Open Edge Tee and have always wanted to make another. I wanted to treat myself to the yarn originally used - Undine, fingering weight linen and cotton blend yarn. I went for the colourway Carrot and can’t wait to case on!

There was more yarn that just Ritual Dye’s own, including other local dyers and well known brands such a Spincycle.

If you’re a sewer, there were things for you there too! Lots of fabric options and notions for all fibre crafts.

I really liked the vibe of this space, if I could of, I would have pulled up a chair and happily spent an afternoon knitting in that space.

Fibre Rhythm Craft and Design

Fibre Rhythm Craft and Design is just across the street from Ritual Dyes, so you must check it would while you’re in the area.

It was much larger than Ritual Dyes, with loads of yarn options, from budget friendly, to more local dyers. They also covered lots of different fibre based crafts including crochet and weaving.

You can see they must hold classes in this space, if I lived here, I’d definitely be signing myself up for some. The staff member I spoke to was so friendly and took the time to point me in the direction of what I was looking for, as well as explain all the other things they had to offer.

I walked away with a new pair of circular knitting needles and a souvenir stitch marker.

There was obviously many local yarn stores in Portland that I didn’t get to. We were only in town for a few days, staying in the downtown area. Being reliant on public transport, and wanting to enjoy all that Portland has to offer, there wasn’t time to visit them all. But I’m sure we’ll be back one day soon.

Portland has an annual yarn crawl - Rose City Yarn Crawl. It would be wise to time a visit to Portland with that!
