Lonsdale Toque pattern

An image of the maker, Emma, wearing the Lonsdale Toque. The landscape behind is tress and mountains

The Lonsdale toque is the very first pattern I created and published! Rather ambitiously, I decided to combine both crochet and knitting for this one!

The reason for this was that I could picture the style of hat I wanted to create. I loved the look of crochet waffle stitches, but I wanted to combine that with the minimalist look of stockinette stitch.

If you didn’t know, ‘toque’ is the term Canadians use when referring to winter hats/beanies.

This pattern is perfect for the transitional season of fall into winter, or for those like me, who get a warm head in anything heavier than double-knit weight yarn, even in the middle of winter. (Please note, I have been living in both UK and Vancouver, Canada, where winters are relatively mild..perhaps I would feel differently about that if I lived a winter in the Yukon!)

You even have two options with this unisex hat- you could simply create the crocheted, waffle stitch brim, ending it there and having a lovely headband. Or, continue on to pick up stitches around the band and knit the rest of the hat.

I think this is an enjoyable pattern for an advanced beginner in both knitting and crochet.

Materials

  • 4mm crochet hook. Or whichever size you need to obtain gauge

  • 4 mm knitting needles on circular thread 16” but can be longer if you want to do magic loop method.  Or whichever size needle you need to obtain gauge

  • 8x stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
