The Christmas season of gift-giving is creeping up on us! This blog post is here to give you a list of inspiration. If you have knitters and crocheters in your life and want to buy them something useful for their craft, this is for you.

Perhaps you're here because you have a knitter or crocheter in your life, and you aren't sure what to buy them. Or maybe you're already a knitter and/or crocheter looking at ideas for small items you might need to get for your next trip.

Make sure you save a link to this post or pin to your Pinterest, as it'll be relevant for any gift-giving time, not just Christmas.

Speaking from experience as a crafter, there's always something to buy in this hobby! If you're looking for inspiration, listed below are some valuable items that make great small gifts for knitters and crocheters that would also be useful when packing for vacation or travelling (including day-to-day commutes). As you'll discover, these could make great gifts even if you don't travel. For example, I've selected particular travel-themed stitch markers, but you can get many different themed stitch markers and other notions. Do you have a favourite TV show or famous landmark? You can probably find themed stitch markers for them on Etsy!

Note: This blog post does not contain affiliates; it only links to things I have purchased myself or items I have found online through research for this post..

  1. Phone stand (with notions tray)

When travelling, I make sure my patterns are available on my phone through screenshots or downloaded PDFs, but it can still be frustrating to try to prop my phone up on the plane's table tray. This phone stand from Thread and Maple is the perfect solution. Not only does it enable you to prop your phone up anywhere so you can see your pattern (or watch Netflix!) as you go, but the notions tray of this object is magnetic, so there is no risk of your stitch makers/needles scattering if there's turbulence or bumpy journeys!

2. Canvas project bags

Even if you're only taking a small project, it's helpful to be able to keep all your bits and pieces together. I prefer a canvas bag, as they are flexible, and you can more easily squeeze it into the top of your bag. I love the style of these from Sweet Acorn Creations, but there are many more on Etsy.

3. Knitting needle/crochet hook holder

I always recommend taking interchangeable needles, especially on long-haul flights, as it increases your chances of getting them through airport security (you can read more about airplane travel with knitting materials here). You'll need something to keep them in, and a knitting needle/crochet hook holder is just the thing. I currently use a plastic case which came Knit Picks interchangeable needle set I purchased many years ago (link), and materials available range from leather to linen. It depends on how hardy you need your case to be when determining what to buy. My personal preference is to purchase items made with more natural materials, and I have my eyes on these beautiful linen ones I saw on Etsy.

This knitting and crochet toolkit from Akerworks, also looks like it would be a fantastic travel companion.

4. Stitch stoppers and notions

Stitch stoppers and other notions will likely be essential to your trip! For knitters, I highly recommend needle stoppers. I couldn't tell you the number of times I've been rummaging around in my luggage and accidentally pulled on a knitting needle, releasing a load of stitches that I had to painfully pick back up…or even worse, frog the whole thing and start again!

I bought some really fun ones from a BC maker, Clare, at Perfectly Knotted's store. She has lots of funky stoppers and stitch markers.

While specifically searching Etsy for travel-themed stitch markers, I came across this other Canadian maker - Gentle Island Knits. They have stitch markers themed around Canadian provinces, and I'm obsessed! They're high on my Christmas wish list.

One final Etsy store (because it turned out I loved browsing notions!) with eye-catching stitch markers and notions is Boho Knits.

5. Compressive packing cubes

Packing cubes are great for any traveller. They have been a game changer for my travels. Not only do they help to keep my luggage organized, but the compressive ones also help save room in my backpack. This year, I purchased a Sea to Summit compression dry bag. It was THE perfect bag for storing all my yarn in! Did it also enable me to buy more yarn on my trip without taking up much extra space? It sure did! I'll leave it to you to decide whether that is a good idea.

You can find me demonstrating my compression bag through an Instagram reel I posted.

So there is my list of 5 ideas. Hopefully, that has given you some inspiration. If you have any other travel-themed ideas, let me know in the comments!
