The Therapeutic Benefits of Knitting and Crochet on Mental Health

Burying my face in my projects while sitting on a hotel bed in Kathmandu, Nepal

In the world of crafting, knitting and crochet stand out not just as creative hobbies but also as powerful tools for improving mental health. Virginia Woolf once said, "Knitting is the saving of life." and i think it captures the essence of how these crafts can positively impact well-being. In this blog post, I’ll talk through five of the mental health benefits I think these fibre crafts bring.

Before we go on, the crochet and knitting patterns I design are created with simplicity and meditative in mind. Easy to pick up and put down, without having to think too much. Be sure to. check them out before you go!

Mindfulness

Engaging in these activities requires focus and attention to detail, which can help quiet the mind and reduce stress. The repetitive motions involved in knitting and crochet can also induce a state of relaxation similar to meditation, leading to decreased anxiety and an overall sense of calm.

Accomplishment and Pride

We create beautiful and functional pieces with their own hands. This sense of achievement can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose, particularly for those struggling with mental health issues.

Mood boosting

Research has also shown that knitting and crochet can have a positive impact on mood and mental health. A study published in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy (2013) found that participants who engaged in knitting reported feeling happier and more relaxed compared to those who did not. The rhythmic and repetitive nature of these crafts is believed to stimulate the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood.

Good for social life

The social aspect of knitting and crochet can be beneficial for mental health. Joining a knitting or crochet group provides an opportunity for social interaction and a sense of belonging, which are important factors in maintaining good mental health. I’m not currently in one, but I really want to push myself and get out to one this year. Sharing skills, patterns, and stories with others who share a passion for these crafts can create a supportive and nurturing community.

Taking my projects everywhere, really does help to ease my anxiety while travelling…as well as pass on the time on long travel days!

Self expression

Knitting and crochet can also serve as a form of self-expression. Many crafters use these mediums to explore their creativity and emotions, creating pieces that reflect their personality and experiences. This creative outlet can be therapeutic, allowing us to process their thoughts and feelings in a constructive way.

Travel anxiety

If you know me by now, you know I had to squeeze a travel angle in here too! Knitting and crochet are great for the anxious traveller, in fact it really helped my on my adventures last year. Here are some reasons why:

  • Calming Effect: The repetitive motions of knitting or crochet can induce a sense of calm and relaxation, which can help alleviate anxiety during travel.

  • Distraction: Engaging in a craft like knitting or crochet can serve as a distraction from anxious thoughts and worries, allowing travellers to focus their attention on a creative and soothing activity.

  • Sense of Control: Travelling can often feel overwhelming and out of our control, but knitting and crochet provides a sense of control as we are able to create something tangible and meaningful.

  • Mindfulness: These crafts promote mindfulness, encouraging individuals to stay present in the moment and pay attention to their surroundings, which can be grounding during travel.

  • Comfort: Having a familiar and comforting activity like knitting or crochet can provide a sense of security and comfort in unfamiliar environments.
